Have you heard of the work of Festo? They are developing some truly beautiful automata, including Air Penguins and Molecubes. See this video. I think their design-led approach is not only creating some very useful mechanisms, but can potentially change the way we in the West perceive robotics as part of everyday life. Would love to know your thoughts.

Are not the Japanese robots just so much fun and inventive. You will find that the talent to build robots is not limited to the Japanese. Because they accept robots as part of their daily lives more than a majority of those living in the west does not mean we in the so called west cannot build great machines. I build robots and I will spend many many months with blood sweat and tears to see our mechanical children completed. You have no doubt heard of Robot wars, an arena where builders fight their machines. I watched these shows at one time and was shocked to see a walking robot destroyed in seconds. What had taken the creator of the machine many hours to build destroyed to satisfy the blood, oops oil lust of the viewers.

Please, we can make better use of our creations than place them in roman like battles. What does that say about us as a civilization?? Let us build machines that can develop and reach their full potential.
